105 East H St. - This was the retirement home for the governor known as the “Father of Nebraska Tourism.” Morrison moved to McCook in 1942 and established a successful law practice. He was elected governor in 1960 and re-elected twice in 1962 and 1964. As governor, Morrison established the Commission on the Status of Women as well as the Nebraska Arts Council.
Other Morrison achievements as governor include establishment of a state employee’s retirement system and creation of the state’s educational television system. Morrison remained active long after his retirement from public life and was the driving force behind the establishment of the Great Platte River Road Memorial Archway Monument spanning I-80 at Kearney. Until his death at age 98 on April 19, 2004, Morrison continued to speak out passionately about matters important to him. In his last years he returned to his beloved hometown of McCook, where he could often be seen with his wife, Maxine, working on the flower beds in the yard of this house.
