Mural Project

McCook Mural Project

The McCook Community mural project is a year-long engagement calling members from the community to come together to converse and share stories about what they find important about life and the place they live in.

The lead artists, Darcy Millette and Amber Hansen, have lead design workshops inviting participants to create drawings, write poems, and share stories that will help to shape the mural’s themes and content. The lead artists, assistants, and apprentices have worked together to create a final composition utilizing the material collected at the design workshops.

Assistant Artists: Wes McCollam and Karrie Steely

Apprentice Artists: Elizabeth Aguirre, Maria Lopez Campos and Asher Long

Karrie Steely is an artist, writer and adventurer who lives in rural Nebraska. She’s worn many hats as an artist, including teaching, commercial and studio art. Karrie spent many years volunteering for community based organizations in her native Colorado.

Wes McCollam is a local, emerging artist who paints using mixed media and natural materials on canvas to create highly textural and colorful pieces. He was commissioned in 2017 to paint a large piece that is part of a permanent collection at The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) in Kearney. Wes is excited about future plans to expand into a studio space to continue producing his art.
