While some people forget (or try to forget) their birthdays, Sharon Bohling is always on top of things, sending birthday cards to countless friends and family every year to wish them a great day. It is just one of the ways Sharon makes her mark on those around her.

If you are around Sharon for even a short time, you will know what she is thinking because she is also well known for her t-shirts with sayings about everything about reading to politics.

But she is also sporting the t-shirts of those organizations and events she is part of, which are numerous.

Because of all these activities, Sharon was awarded the October 2025 McCook Volunteer of the Month award. She received the award during one of the many events where she can be found - the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival’s First Tuesday, which takes place throughout the year with a different topic each month.

Sharon is one of the original volunteers with the Buffalo Commons Storytelling and Music Festival, which takes place the second weekend every June.

Sharon can also be found volunteering at the McCook Chamber of Commerce events throughout the year. As a former school librarian, books are still pivotal for Sharon so she served on the McCook City Library board and she volunteers for many McCook Public School activities including helping organize Bison Days each February. Other volunteer roles include as treasurer for the Museum of the High Plains and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

The McCook Philanthropy Council recognizes a volunteer every month who is doing good work in McCook and Red Willow County.

If there is a volunteer in the community who should be recognized, please contact the McCook Chamber of Commerce at 308-345-3200 or visit McCook Volunteers on the McCook Community Foundation Fund’s website, mccookfoundation.org to complete a nomination form.

The only requirement is that the nominee must be a resident of McCook or Red Willow County but please have information about the nominee along with where and how they volunteer in the community. The volunteer honoree is selected monthly by the McCook Philanthropy Council.
